On Monday, August 13th. (in association with the Lake Tahoe Concours d’Elegance in Homewood) the Tahoe Yacht Club (TYC) will sponsor the Woody Over-the-Bottom rally. This special event requires participants to be ready to collect race instructions on the water at 8:30am off Tahoe City Marina where boats will return for the finish. There will be a separate start for all wooden boats beginning at 9am. Other Tahoe Yacht Club Members will join the fun and run the same course following the Woodies’ start so that they parade together. Separate trophies for both divisions will be presented back at the TYC clubhouse during a light brunch celebration that will include a Mimosa/Bloody Mary bar directly following the race, beginning approximately at 10:30am with the Award Presentation at 11:30am to allow for other commitments on Monday afternoon.
The cost per boat for the race is $35. Captains and crew will contribute $25 per person either online at the attached link, or at the door for brunch. But registration for these events are required since we need a headcount for the Brunch. Forms may be found on the Tahoe Yacht Club website www.tahoeyc.com, or by calling Tahoe Yacht Club at (530) 581-4700. The deadline from registration is Wednesday, August 1st, but we ask that you contact the TYC as soon as possible.
What is an OTB? Each boat attempts to follow the same course, departing at set intervals, with the objective to match the mark time set by the TYC staff in the Club’s mark boat. Along the course there are multiple check points where the crew will pick up a playing card, which is used to form a poker hand at the end of the rally. For fun, we will also have a voluntary $20 ‘Calcutta’ with payment on the water.
Although no specialized equipment is required, and speeds are not excessive, many skippers believe that both a GPS and a stop watch are useful. History has proved that a successful performance in an OTB requires limited navigational knowledge, some boat handling skills and most importantly a whole lot of luck. Skippers will find one or two additional crew to be helpful. Most importantly, in addition to being challenging, the rally is intended to be fun!
