50 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE
PERPETUAL TROPHIES
TAHOE YACHT CLUB FOUNDATION PERPETUAL TROPHY HISTORY
Perpetual Trophies. The very word – “Perpetual” – enduring and unsurpassed, the continuing of tradition. Fulfilling a dream and receiving recognition which will remain an everlasting benchmark in boating history.
Concours dreams and achievements are validated with first, second and third-place awards “in class” and with the presentation of special Perpetual trophies going to the most meticulously-restored, highest-point boats. Tahoe Yacht Club Foundation now has 17 of these special trophies made possible by the generous assistance of endowers, many who have competed and won their own share of precious “Concours silver, crystal, and mahogany” over the past 50 years of this event.
We invite you to learn more about Tahoe Yacht Club Foundation’s Perpetual Trophies, their history and their winners, by clicking on the listings below.
OVERALL BEST OF SHOW - THE JORDY CARLTON MEMORIAL
This is the Jordy Carlton Memorial Vintage Boat Perpetual Trophy. In 1973, Ed Grebitus, William Lyon, Burton Olson, Peter Carey, and Georgann Beckett presented this trophy in memory of their friend, Jordy Carlton. The winner of this award is decided by the Judging Committee on such qualities as authenticity of equipment, cleanliness, presentation, overall condition with consideration for age, and the judged point total.

BEST ORIGINAL TAHOE BOAT
This is a subjective award. The trophy piece and topic were presented and endowed by the Owen Owens Family in 2003. The winning boat is selected by the collaboration of the Owens family, the Judging Committee, and the Trophy Committee. There must be sufficient documentation to show that the winning boat was originally commissioned, sold new, and delivered new for immediate use on Lake Tahoe. An Original Tahoe Boat would be one that was delivered new from the factory / builder to Lake Tahoe with no stops on the way.

PEOPLE'S CHOICE
This trophy is awarded according to balloting from the public attending the Lake Tahoe Concours d’Elegance. The most votes determine the winner. The Northern California / Lake Tahoe Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society endowed this trophy in 2002. It is believed that the late Glenn Wilson, a strong personality in the Tahoe Yacht Club, originated this trophy in the name of the new, at that time, Lake Tahoe Chapter of the ACBS in 1984, later changing its name to the Northern California / Lake Tahoe Chapter. The winning boat for this award is announced and awarded at the end of the last day of the Concours. The inscription on the trophy piece still reads, The Lake Tahoe Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society.

RESULTS BY YEAR
THE POINT SYSTEM
The Lake Tahoe Concours d’Elegance strives to raise the bar each year, earning its reputation as the most prestigious boat show in North America. The show uses its own 100-point system. Each boat is judged on its own merit and multiple 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place awards can be won in each class. Boats are compared to each other when selecting Perpetual Awards. The collective goal is to reward those who have restored their boats to the authenticity and standard as they appeared when they were shipped from the factory.
Concours Chief Judge Terry Fiest stresses three things:
- Judge what is in front of you today – not what it used to be or might be one day.
- Base your decisions on what you know to be true – not what you think you know. Facts are verifiable, opinions are just that – opinions.
- This should be fun for all involved! After all, at the end of the day it’s just a “boat show.” One of the best in the country, but still just a boat show.
