Sapphire – 1998 Hacker-Craft 24ft Triple Cockpit Runabout. This Hacker-Craft was built at the Hacker-Craft factory at Lake George, New York. The boat came to Sierra Boat in 2002 where it was stored and used out of. It was sold from the Sierra Boat brokerage in 2006 and it resided for many years at Lake Tahoe and then moved about 70 miles west of Tahoe to Grass Valley, CA. During the time it was in Grass Valley, it was used at small lakes around that area and in Tahoe. Recent cosmetic work and inspection was performed in 2018 by renowned wood boat restorer Curtis Bauman in Grass Valley. The boat was brought back to Sierra Boat in 2018 and was purchased in 2019 by its current owner.
The boat was further refurbished by Sierra Boat over the Winter of 2020, when the finish was brought up to showroom condition.
In the Late 1980’s, Bill Morgan of Silver Bay, NY, resurrected the historic Hacker name and began to build new Hacker-Crafts based on the original designs from the 1930’s. These are not your granddads boats as these modern Hacker-Crafts feature wood epoxy construction. These boats go in the water leak free due to the multiple laminations of plywood and solid mahogany with marine epoxy glues. The hull sides as well as the decks receive the same construction. Plank movement is virtually eliminated, lowering maintenance costs. Hacker-Crafts are known for a very comfortable ride, even in rough waters.
Sapphire’s power comes from a reliable fuel injected 454 Crusader engine with 350 hp. The engine block is a GMC Truck 454 V8. The transmission is a Borg Warner velvet-drive. The boat is equipped with a 50-gallon fuel tank, two 12V battery system, a “Sea-Fire” automatic Halon 1301 fire extinguisher system, and a custom-made cover with insulating deck pads.
