Special Runabouts were built from 1949 to 1952. They were developed from the 16’ Special Runabout, but with a larger radius transom.
The Mint Julep 2 is a 1950 Chris-Craft Special Runabout. It was purchased by the Melfi family who kept it at Buckeye Lake near Columbus, Ohio. In early 2006, the grandson took the boat to be repaired at the Antique Boat Center in Cincinnati. Unfortunately, he did not return and A.B.C. stored the boat. Brian Keen, who worked at Antique Boat Center, was able to locate the original owner and purchased it from her with the promise that Brian would take her for a ride on their lake when he had completed the restoration.
FROM ONE MINT JULEP TO ANOTHER
The Mint Julep 2 resides at the home of Gary and April Bardonner, on Harrison Lake in Columbus, Indiana. April and I first saw the boat when Brian was replacing the bottom. Gary and April owned, at the time, the Mint Julep which is a 1940 Runabout and made regular trips to the Antique Boat Center for maintenance. They saw the completed restoration that Brian had done. He is now the owner of Motorboat Garage in Cincinnati. After cruising with Brian on the Ohio River Gary and April decided to purchase his boat and name it the Mint Julep 2. They sold the Mint Julep to a gentleman in Connecticut.
Mint Julep 2 received Best Chris-Craft restoration in 2015 at the Kentucky Bluegrass show. It was honored to be the lead boat for the 2017 July 4th parade at Harrison Lake.
