The Joltin Joe is a 1949, 22′ Chris-Craft Runabout, originally owned by legendary New York Yankee great Joe DiMaggio. The boat was bestowed upon DiMaggio in 1949 in a ceremony at Yankee Stadium by fans grateful for his monster season (one of many) the year before. Gracefully crafted of first-class materials, the vessel was one of the premier boats of its day. The Joltin Joe was shipped to Martinez, California, the town of his birth, where he would occasionally tour the waters of Suisun and San Francisco Bay.
In 1954 Joe DiMaggio and actress Marilyn Monroe were married and he entertained his film-star bride after the wedding with a reception in Martinez and a cruise on – you guessed it – the Joltin Joe.
Joe DiMaggio Donates to City of Martinez
In 1991, Joe DiMaggio donated the boat to the City of Martinez where it was perched proudly on a pedestal at the marina and shared with thousands of visitors. Unfortunately, continued exposure to the elements took its toll on the Joltin Joe and it was removed and stored while a restoration project could be undertaken. The Sons of Italy Lodge 2167 and the Martinez Carpenters Union, Local 152 became aware of this irreplaceable piece of sports memorabilia and the value it had to the community and took on the restoration work. They, along with master boat builder Don Curtis of Benicia, have been working on the Joltin Joe since 2008. The finished boat will be put on display in a climate controlled indoor space, yet to be determined, in the City of Martinez for future generations to enjoy.
